Last week, the middle school students attended a presentation by Ms. Leza Lowitz, an American writer, editor, and translator who lives in Tokyo. She has published 20 books of her own, and has also helped to bring many modern Japanese poets and fiction writers into English for the first time.
This is Ms. Lowitz's second visit to Sacred Heart. She talked to the students about her newest book, Up from the Sea, which tells the story of the March 11th 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The students were able to gain a deeper understanding of the event, as well as ponder on the powers of resilience and hope, and the strength of the individual in the face of disaster. During the question and answer session, Ms. Lowitz and the students engaged in discussions about March 11th, and also about the joys and challenges of being a writer.
