ADMISSIONS POLICY


The school enrolls approximately 600 students from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12 from the international community in the Tokyo area. Admission of students will be for those who will benefit from the education in English offered at the International School of the Sacred Heart (ISSH), those whose parents (and the students involved when age makes it possible) believe in the philosophy of the school. The essence of our education is the development of the whole person: intellectually, spiritually, emotionally, and physically.

Procedures for admission include the following:

1. Application documents to be turned in to the Admissions Office
a. Application form (signed and photo attached)
b.

Three years of school records from previous school(s) & official transcript (High School only)

c. The Parent Survey Form (Kindergarten Only)
d. Any standardized tests results
e. An evaluation form or a letter of recommendation from the previous school
f.

A copy of appropriate pages from the passport(s)

g.

A letter of introduction from father/mother's boss or a colleague (K/JS only)

h.

An Application fee of 20,000 JPY is to be paid by bank transfer as follows:

Upon receipt of this your application will be officially registered you will be contacted to arrange testing and interviewing.

2. Assessment test
- Testing or screening
- Evaluation of test papers by Department Heads of English and Mathematics
- Academic evaluation of records and test papers by the Admissions Board.
3. Interview
(K/JS) Interview with parents by the Headmistress, Principal and Admissions Registrar
(MS/HS) Interview with parents and prospective student by the Headmistress, Principal, and Admissions Registrar
4. Admission
- Final decision by the Admissions Board
- Parents will be notified by the Admissions Registrar whether or not the student will
be admitted.
- Student's schedule is arranged by the Principal.
- Parents of new students should be informed that the school may change the students' classes within the first two weeks for proper placement.

GUIDELINES

ESL Students

- Students knowing no English will be accepted on a case-by-case decision, depending on the space-availability.
- ESL students can be accepted with no knowledge of English up to Grade 10, provided they have a strong academic background.
- At least one of the parents should be able to speak and read English.

Students with Special Needs

- All students accepted to ISSH are expected to function in the regular classroom.
It is important to note that the ongoing enrollment at ISSH for students with special needs, will be based upon the students' ability to function within the regular program and special services the school currently offers at each grade level.
- The International School of the Sacred Heart does not have the facilities or resources to accommodate children who have significant learning, emotional or physical disabilities. Parents of a child receiving any special services, such as learning disabled instruction, remedial support, speech/language therapy, occupational/physical therapy, or seeing any educational specialist outside of the regular classroom, must contact the school prior to the beginning of the admissions process.
- Before the application is processed, supporting documentation must be received to include copies of the most recent educational/psychological assessment and the Individualized Educational Program (IEP) from the applicant's current school.

Transfer Policy

- All requests for student recommendations for transfer of schools are to be directed through the Admissions Registrar. Once the official transfer process for a student begins, ISSH may not guarantee a place for the student for the next academic year.
