Our Facilities

The International School of the Sacred Heart is located just three minutes from Hiroo subway station on an expansive site surrounded by greenery in the heart of Tokyo.

Our new building opened in December 2011 and features a state of the art gymnasium and mini-gym for all grade levels, the Kindergarten and Junior School (K/JS) classrooms, K/JS library, K/JS art studio, and K/JS music room designed to meet the needs our students.

Art Studios

The school has three Art studios, one for the K/JS students, one for MS/HS Art and one for Pottery. These studios support instruction and growth in the creative arts allowing students to develop their skills in both 2D and 3D techniques.


Liturgy is offered in the School Chapel every Thursday after school for our community. The Campus Chapel is used for the opening and closing school liturgies in which Grades 1 through to 12 attend. Our outstanding quality Christmas and Spring concerts are also held there.

Dining Room

The dining room is available to the Junior, Middle and High School students. Cezars Kitchen provides morning snacks, afternoon snacks and hot lunch. Drama Room

The Drama studio is a space where students can develop their performance skills and produce small plays.

Food Lab

The food lab sits on the fourth floor of the MS/HS building. Five well-equipped kitchen units allow students from Kindergarten and up to learn kitchen skills as they develop an understanding of nutrition and healthy eating habits.


In the gymnasium, P.E. lessons, sporting practices and matches are held. There is a mini-gym adjacent to the gym and a training area on the upper floor. The gymnasium also hosts wider school activities such as school performances, assemblies and graduation.

Kindergarten Open Area

The Kindergarten has a large open area where children can explore the world around them in various work stations.


Two well-resourced libraries, one in the K/JS building and the other in the Middle/High School building, provide a welcoming environment for students to engage in both individual or group study, reading and computer based activities Parents are also welcome to use the libraries for their enjoyment.


The mini-gym is adjacent to the main gym and used for a avariety of activities such as gymnastics, dance, etc.


Multi-Purpose Rooms

Three multi-purpose rooms provide plenty of space for whole grade level or school division activities, parent meetings, presentations and performances.

Music Room

The large MS/HS Music Room, with multiple-use floor area, which can facilitate large choral and orchestral rehearsals as well as choreography rehearsals. There is a grand piano, plus many electronic keyboards, a large orchestral percussion battery, guitars, and several computers. The music library (in the Music Room) houses many choral, instrumental, and solo repertoire folios and books.

The students share the main playground which provides age-appropriate equipment for the JS and MS students, as well as a meeting and sporting area for the older students. We have an enclosed playground for the Kindergarten and younger Junior School students to play in that is fully equipped with Bornelund play equipment.

Pottery Room

We work with two glass and pottery kilns and offer over 100 glazes. We cast metals and work with clay, metals, glass and other materials.

Our studio holds 25 pottery wheels and ample work surfaces for large sculptural work. We have an open space where we can construct large sculptural pieces and a garden gas kiln for raku firing.

Science Laboratories

The Junior School provides science in the classroom through implementation of the International Primary Curriculum (IPC). We have four laboratories designed for Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Middle School Science. Students use Vernier data-logging equipment in Grades 8-12. State of the art 3D Educational technology and software is used in classes to further enhance the learning experience.

Students in Grades 5 to 12 bring their own Mac Laptops to school for use each day. In the Kindergarten and Junior School (Grades 1 -4), extensive use is made of iTouches and Mac Books to enhance the learning of the students.

Tennis Courts

There are two floodlit tennis courts used for P.E. classes, practice and training by our HS tennis team, and tennis lessons for students. The ISSH Tennis Parents’ Circle schedules drills and tournaments against other parents of international schools.

The Fitness Area

The fitness area is a well-stocked weights room with treadmills, rowing machine, exercise bikes, free weights and weight machines. It is open for free use by Sacred Heart parents, when classes and teams are not using it.
